Taxi Tips
In the last 14 years (2023) I’ve only had one issue with a Taxi driver who overcharged me (his meter was rigged) other than that I’ve had no issues at all. All taxi’s will have the Taxi number on the inside of the passengers door. If you are worried take a photo of that. 99.9% of Taxi drivers won’t give you any issues at all and from my experience are genuine people trying to earn difficult living.
Nearly all Taxi’s will not speak English (apart from saying the words “Manchester United”) so you either need to show them the address or ask for somewhere close by that they will know.
When you ask to be taken somewhere you ask “Bye (name of place)” bye means go. If the Taxi driver says “my bye” back to you then he won’t take you there. This is because in Thailand the main fare is calculated by travelling a distance rather than by waiting in traffic which is why they are less keen to take you through areas of heavy traffic. To get around this you could offer him a tip or ask for a price to take you there. To ask for a price just ask “Tow (as in TOWel) Rye (as in Rye Bread) he might then give you a price. If he’s still not interested then maybe it the end of his shift.
From the Airport to the Condo in 2023 it costs about 200-350 depending on which airport plus tolls (about 120-150).
The actual address for BSC is Chareon Nakhon 15A. Pronounced “Cha ron nak corn Sip Ha A” This doesn’t mean that it’s number 15A on Chareon Nakhon road but Soi (or Street) 15A which itself with have numbers.
The closest locations are:
- Senafast Shopping Centre ask for “bye Senafest” – Senafest is on the opposite side of the road to BSC but it is easily crossed. Unless it is raining or you have heavy bags then it’s maybe easier to get off here. It’s only 50-100m away.
- The Peninsula Hotel – Very well know as it’s one of the most famous in Bangkok “bye Peninsula Hotel” – It’s only 100-150 metres from BSC and on the same side. If you are standing outside the Peninsula Hotel then you need to walk in the direction of the traffic and under the Saphan Taksin bridge and it’s the next left. (Soi 15A) You could say to the Taxi when you get outside the Peninsula (before they get into the Hotel) “bye tom bye” – Go straight and when you get under the bridge “bye Leo Sai, bye Condo”
- “The River Condo” It’s a very tall Condo apartment which is very close to use and is the other side of the Park next to the old Pepsi Dock.
- ICONSiam – Everyone in Bangkok knows where this is! – It’s a 10 min walk so only for days when it isn’t raining or when you have light luggage 🙂
Most Taxi’s will be coming across the Saphan Taksin Bridge from the City (as per the photo above). BSC is on the other side of the river from the City. As they cross the bridge they should stay in the left lane “bye Leo Si” (as in Simon) they then will come to the junction where Senafast is where it joins the Chareon Nakhon road and the Taxi should turn left “bye Leo Si” the road 15A is on the opposite side as you turn left at this junction but you need to carry on up this road and (bye U turn – that one should be obvious!) They will turn right to be heading back towards Senafest which will now be on the other side of the road (the side that BSC is located at). Just under the Saphan Taksin bridge there is a left turn and the Condo is on the right “bye Condo” or “bye Leo Kwar” turn right. “A knee” means just here.
There is another Condo complex called Baan Chaophraya and one called Sathorn Chaophraya but they are not very often confused with BSC. Baan means house, Sathorn is the area and Chaophraya is the name of Bangkok’s river.
